Patient Information
Your first visit
The initial consultation is the most important phase of treatment as this is when we will determine the type of treatment you require. We recognise the importance of involving you, our patient, in this important decision-making process, as we feel it is imperative you understand the process and what is involved.
Each patient is assessed carefully and problems are diagnosed before treatment begins. Correct diagnosis involves careful study of photographs, x-rays, and dental study models. By defining the nature of the problem and then planning treatment accordingly, we can meet your specific needs and desires. Advice can then be given on:
- Treatment options
- When treatment should start
- How long it should last
- How much it is likely to cost
Once a treatment plan has been developed, you are ready to begin treatment. All clinical and administrative information will also be presented in order for you to have a thorough understanding of our office procedures and how to work as a team in achieving the perfect smile.

Appointment scheduling
The appointment for your initial appliance (braces, expanders, etc.) usually takes 40 to 90 minutes. You will then see us at regular intervals 6 to 10 weeks apart for adjustments (which takes 20 to 40 minutes). We schedule longer appointments in the morning and shorter appointments after school. By doing this, we do not reserve an entire afternoon for one or two patients but rather accommodate as many families as possible for after-school appointments. If you prefer to come to the office during a quieter time, please schedule an appointment during school hours.
Additionally, it is important that patients be on time for their appointments so that the schedule runs smoothly and other patients are not made to wait. If you cannot keep an appointment, please contact the office at least 24 hours in advance should you need to reschedule. It can be difficult to reschedule since most appointments are made 6 to 10 weeks in advance. Finally, all appointments should be made before leaving the office. If your appointment needs to be changed, we will be happy to find a better time that is more convenient.
