Orthognathic surgery
At Orthosmile Orthodontics in Aspley, Chermside, Newmarket and Bulimba we offer orthognathic surgery.
As an adult’s facial bones are no longer growing, some severe malocclusions cannot be corrected with braces alone. Often, these abnormalities cause difficulty associated with chewing, talking, sleeping and other routine activities. In such cases, orthodontic treatment is combined with corrective jaw surgery (orthognathic surgery) to achieve an acceptable outcome and also help improve the overall appearance of the facial profile.
The advantages of orthognathic surgery
Using the latest in digital imaging technology, we will demonstrate the overall functional and aesthetic benefits of orthognathic surgery. Computerised treatment planning:
- minimises treatment times
- improves recovery periods
- improves the overall efficacy of your surgery
State-of-the-art materials such as titanium plates and miniature screws provide stability, strength and predictability to your treatment. These advances in technology, procedures and equipment reduce post-surgical recovery time, thus allowing patients to return to their normal routines soon after the surgery.
Microimplants
Microimplants have changed the face of orthodontics in recent years by allowing orthodontists to achieve greater movement of teeth in shorter times. This can be done in ways that were originally not possible with contemporary braces.
What Microimplants do
Microimplants are tiny titanium alloy pins measuring only usually 6mm to 12mm in length and 1.2mm to 2.0 mm in diameter. Titanium is the material used in conventional implants and has a long history of extensive use in dentistry. Once in position, the implants can be used to move teeth into their desired position. When their job is done, they are simply removed.
In the right cases a more ideal result can be achieved and the total amount of time needed to wear braces can be reduced by 4 to 6 months. An implant can also be used to correct isolated teeth without the need to wear a full set of braces. The implant is easily placed in the patient’s upper or lower jaw bone either by the orthodontist or an oral surgeon. It is a simple process – taking less than 5 minutes to position.
Using microimplants can shorten the time you need to wear braces. This is ideal for adults who prefer to wear braces for the least amount of time. The choice is yours. If you have any other queries please do not hesitate to consult Dr Daxter Yeo.
Orthognathic surgery may be unnecessary if orthodontic treatment can correct the problem. With the latest advances in orthodontics, this is sometimes the case. We will determine if orthognathic surgery is the correct treatment option for you.
