Eating Habits
with Braces
When you rst start orthodontic treatment, you will nd it
more comfortable to eat softer foods but once your teeth
have adjusted, you should be able to eat most of your
favourite foods as long you take extra precautions like
cutting them up, cooking them softer and avoiding the
harder foods! Throughout treatment we rmly recommend
you avoid hard crunchy food as these can physically
damage parts of your braces and slow down your
treatment. Acidic/sugary food should be consumed in Not Recommended With Braces
moderation and not eaten between meals. Hard/crunchy food:
• Uncut whole apples and carrots
Recommended • Baguettes
Soft food: • Hard candy eg. minties
• Bananas and other soft fruits (cut into small pieces) • Crackling
• Soups • Ice cubes or ice blocks
• Soft fresh bread (not hard crusty bread) • Nuts
• Soft savoury baked goods • Popcorn
• Pasta / Noodles / Rice / Mashed potato • Corn on the cob
• Meat (cooked softer and cut up into smaller pieces) • Corn chips
• Vegetables (cooked softer or cut up into smaller • Crispy taco shells

• Cheese • Hard biscuits
• Pizza crust
• Bread crust
Acidic/sugary food
• Soft drinks
• Sports drinks
• Citrus fruits
• Lollies
• Ice cream
• Milk shake
• Banana split
• Sweet food (baked goods etc.)
• Added sugar
Sticky food:
• Chewy lollies like to ees, caramels, candy snakes and
gummy bears
• Chewing gum
• Liquorice
• Chocolate
Others:
• No chewing on hard objects like drink bottles, pens,
pencils and buttons
• No chewing on nger nails
• No chewing meat o bones eg. Chicken drumstick,
pork chop, T-bone steak
